Maca Powder Smoothie Recipes: Drink To Your Health

If you are looking for a delicious, easy, healthy, and fast way to eat maca then look no further! Here are few maca powder smoothies recipes that will entice and tickle your taste buds. It covers up the chalky texture and bitter flavor of maca while bringing out the malty taste that will actually improve the overall flavor of the drink. Plus they are all vegan! How much better can it get?

Maca powder is amazing in smoothies! Some people describe the taste as similar to butterscotch but I have always thought of it tasting malty like whoppers without the chocolate. That being said, the taste isn’t very strong but it does impart a subtle flavor in any smoothies I’ve ever put it in.


What Is Maca?

Maca root is a plant that originates from the Andes Mountains of Peru. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family which also includes cabbage, broccoli, turnip, and mustard. The main part of the plant that is eaten is, of course, the roots which were traditionally dried and ground into a powder or flour. Maca varies in color but the most commonly sold shades are yellow, red, and black.

Like most plants of the cabbage family, maca is high in vitamin C, soluble fiber as well as contains multiple nutrients and phytochemicals. It is high in carbohydrates, calcium, potassium, iron, copper, and manganese. For a full list of the nutrition found in maca powder click here.

Maca root, like ginseng, is known as an adaptogenic herb. Herbs classified as adaptogenic means that it promotes homeostasis and stabilizes processes in the body. Other benefits of maca include boosting blood circulation; increasing energy; improving libido and fertility in both sexes; regulating hormone balance; reducing stress and depression; relieving symptoms of menopause; promoting bone health ; and enhancing memory, focus, and clarity.

Love At First Sip

When I was first introduced to maca I was working at a restaurant in Austin, Texas. If you don’t know much about Austin, it is well-known for its food. I’ve seen a dozen restaurants from Austin showcased in food shows like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. One of the many times I went to the Texas Chili Parlor, I saw Aaron Sanchez at the bar. Apparently, he is a regular there. Another burger bar on South Congress that I worked at would have regular visits from Giancarlo Esposito and Elijah Wood. But I digress…

It just so happened that where I worked made some of the best smoothies in town. They carried a huge selection of super foods and supplements including maca. Because I’ve always been interested in ways to improve my health, I did a ton of research on many of the supplements they carried. That is how I discovered the wonderful benefits of maca! I originally started adding it to my drinks for the hormone balancing, energy, and moods lifting effects. And boy, does it work!

As I’ve stated previously in another post about maca’s benefits for women’s fertility, I am certain that I conceived so quickly because of this. I had been adding maca to my smoothies for at least two years before having my little girl. So I’ve had plenty of time to perfect my recipes!


Quick Tips for Making the Best Smoothies

Over the years I’ve discovered some tips and tricks to making the best smoothies ever. They come out creamy and smooth like an ice cream shake this way every time. And kids love them! If you follow these few simple tips you will get even the pickiest eaters to love them too!

  2. Bananas work the best for making a creamy smoothie. But if you don’t like or have an allergy to them you can use 2 oz. avocado, 1-2 tbsp. hemp seeds, or 1 tbsp. hemp or flax oil to achieve the same consistency.
  3. Buy a good blender.
  4. You can put spinach in any smoothie and it won’t change the taste.
  5. Place greens and powders before fruit in blender.
  6. Be conservative with the liquid. I like my smoothies so thick that the straw stands upright. I usually shoot a little under what I think I will need for the juice or milk and slowly add more while the blender is running until I get the consistency I want.
  7. Do not blend any longer than necessary. The blades will heat up while in use and will melt the fruit and make the drink runny.

So without further ado, on to the recipes!


Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

  • A handful of spinach (approx. 1/2 – 1 cup)
  • 1 and 1/2 bananas frozen
  • 2 dates
  • 1 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter
  • 1 tsp. maca powder
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Peanut Butter Hemp Banana Smoothie

Peanut Butter Hemp Smoothie
  • A handful of spinach (approx. 1/2 cup)
  • 1 and 1/2 bananas frozen
  • 1  tbsp. hemp seeds
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter
  • 1 tsp. maca powder
  • 1 tsp. hemp oil
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

P.B. and J with Maca Smoothie

  • 1 banana frozen
    PB and J Smoothie
  • 1/4 cup blueberries frozen
  • 4-5 cherries frozen
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter
  • 1 tsp. maca powder
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 – 1 small jalapeno (optional) This makes it tastes like a peanut butter and jalapeno jelly sandwich. Yum!

Chocolate Coffee Smoothie

  • 1 and 1/2 bananas frozen
  • 1 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 1 tsp. maca powder
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 6 oz. unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 2 oz. cold brew coffee

Strawberry Banana with Maca Smoothie

Strawberry Banana with Maca Smoothie
Strawberry Banana with Maca Smoothie
  • 1 banana frozen
  • 3-4 strawberries frozen
  • 2 dates or 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1 tsp. maca powder
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Instructions

Place greens, peanut butter, dates (if called for), and powders in the blender first.

Then add the bananas and other fruits (if any).

Add the liquid until it sits about 1/2 inch under the very top of the fruit.

Turn on blender at the lowest setting and let it run until everything is starting to blend together. Add more liquid if needed to reach desired thickness.

Slowly turn the setting to high.

Once the smoothie is thoroughly blended add the oil (if any) and blend for another 5 seconds. Immediately serve.


Recipe Notes

If you want a sweeter smoothie, use sweetened vanilla almond milk instead of unsweetened. For any recipe calling for peanut butter, you can substitute it with almond butter or almonds instead. Omit coffee if sensitive to caffeine but replace the liquid with an equal amount of almond milk.

  1. Place everything besides fruit, coffee, and almond milk in the blender first. Then add your bananas.

  2. Add the liquids until it sits about 1/2 inch under the very top of the fruit. (add coffee first and fill the rest with milk)

  3. Turn on blender at the lowest setting and let it run until everything is starting to blend together. Add more liquid if needed to reach desired thickness.

  4. Slowly turn the setting to high.

  5. Once the smoothie is thoroughly blended (and you are getting the vortex at the top), turn off the blender. Immediately serve.

Recipe Notes

If you prefer it sweeter, you can either add 1-2 dates or use sweetened almond milk instead.

Omit coffee if sensitive to caffeine but replace the liquid with an equal amount of almond milk.

If this is a meal replacement or breakfast smoothie add 1 tbsp. peanut or other nut butter, small handful almonds, or 1 tbsp. protein powder; and 1 tsp. oil like hemp or coconut oil.

  • I wanted to try maca out as it has a lot of benefits. I actually really like bitter flavor and I think it would be really awesome addition to my diet. I also go to the gym and trying to add some muscle mass. Is there an ideal time to consume it for someone like me?

    • Hey Furkan!

      I found taking a dose (1 tsp.) of it either first thing in the morning as a wake-up drink or after a workout helped me immensely! If you are planning to use it for muscle building, you could probably have up to 3 tsp. daily but I’d heavily recommend starting slowly with one tsp. and see how your body does with that.

I hadn’t actually heard of Maca before this but I will keep an eye out for it in future! Are Maca smoothies your favorite type of smoothie or is there even better alternatives?

      I’d say maca is a definite addition to most of my smoothies especially if there is any chocolate, coffee, or nuts in the flavor profile. Maca really imparts an earthy, malty flavor to any drink I’ve ever put it in so it pairs well with them.

      However, there are some types of flavors I’ve found that it doesn’t do well with like any smoothie with citrus flavors or a more savory than sweet profile. Or at least I don’t like the flavor combination. If you find a malty, orange flavor appealing than definitely add maca to that type of smoothie!

      Also, you can make any of these smoothies without maca if you don’t have it on hand. They taste great either way!
