Believe me, I know, it is a daily struggle to get your kids to eat vegetables. It’s almost like most kids are born with an inherent dislike for them. Heck, this goes for a majority of adults too! I think wars have started over less.

However, it’s not as difficult as you think to get them their daily dose of vitamins and minerals that really only comes from eating those leafy greens and celery stalks. So I’ve whipped up some green smoothie recipes for kids that are sure to become a hit in your home. And before you know it, your kids denying their vegetables will become a thing of the past! You might be a little skeptical with what I am saying but just place your trust in me and I’ll show you how.

How to Make a Smoothie “Green”

So what exactly makes a smoothie green? Is it the color or content? Is it all about including vegetables no matter the color? These are questions I’ve been asking myself when I was coming up with some smoothie recipes for kids that include vegetables but taste so good they won’t even notice them. Probably the easiest place to start when it comes to making a great green smoothie for kids is spinach and kale. Both of these leafy greens need no introduction on how healthy they are for us to eat. Both are high in Vitamin C, B6, K, and A; as well as a good source of calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium. What makes them so spectacular in smoothies is the taste is hardly even there (especially with spinach)!

Kale can get overwhelming if you put too much in but if you keep it at just one leaf for a 10 oz. smoothie, you should be fine. The other downside to kale is blending. If you have a high-performance blender, you can put the whole leaf in including the thick stem but, if not, you might want to trim the thickest parts off.

Spinach is a bit more flexible. I add spinach to practically every smoothie I make if I have it around and it hasn’t compromised the taste for any of them. For a 10 oz. drink, I’d leave it at about a 1/2 cup of loosely packed spinach.

The real secret to getting these greens blended properly in your smoothie is to put them first, That’s the crucial component! If they are at the bottom of the blender before the fruit, it is the first part pulverized and it blends up perfectly. If you add them in last, they are so light they just sit on top and then the rest of the drink gets runny while you are mashing the greens down.

The other thing to keep in mind is that greens in smoothies tend to bulk up the drink but do not absorb the liquid. So less liquid is the rule with them to keep the drink from getting runny. When pouring in your juice or milk, err on the side of less. If the blades are not turning and it is taxing your machine, slowly pour in more liquid until it starts to move.


Other Greens to Consider

Avocado is the first green that comes to mind when branching out beyond spinach and kale. You’d be surprised how much this fruit (remember it is a single-seeded berry after all) can do when it comes to smoothies. It imparts little to no flavor but adds a wonderful texture and creaminess to any smoothie you add it to. Other than spinach, it is my

other go-to for smoothies. Especially ones without banana!

You can either just scoop it fresh into your blender or my personal favorite is to freeze it. Simply mash the avocado like you are making guacamole and then scrape it into an ice cube tray. Not only does that make a large batch that will save for months but it breaks it up into 1 oz. chunks so no measuring needed!

Besides avocado, there is another green at your disposal that if used in the right combination can be quite tasty. I would like to introduce you to celery.

Now I know what you must be thinking right now. Celery? Seriously? But yes it can work! And celery is so good for you and your kids. It is a significant source of vitamin C and flavonoids, vitamin K, folate, potassium, fiber, and many other vitamins and minerals. Plus, it has unique non-starchy polysaccharides that have been proven to reduce inflammation in the digestive tract (1).

So with all that said, let’s get to the good stuff!


6 Green Smoothie Recipes Your Kid Is Sure To Love

So here are 6 simple green smoothie recipes that are vegan, healthy, and delicious that are favorites with kids!

Green Apple Peach Smoothie

  • 1 cup sliced peaches, frozen
  • 1/4 cup spinach
  • 1/4 cup kale
    Green Apple Peach Smoothie
  • 1/2 to 1 cup apple juice (enough to reach over the greens)

Green Strawberry Banana Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup bananas, frozen (approx. 1/2 medium)
  • 1/2 cup strawberries, frozen (2-4 whole)
  • 1/2 cup spinach
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter (optional)
  • 1/2 to 1 cup apple juice (enough to reach an 1″ below the top of the fruit)

Spinach and P.B. Smoothie

  • 3/4 cup bananas, frozen (approx. 1 banana)
  • 1/2 cup spinach
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter
  • 1/2 to 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (enough to reach over the greens)

Green Mango and Pineapple Smoothie

Green Chocolate Shake
  • 1 cup mango, frozen
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 oz. avocado
  • 1/4 cup spinach
  • 1/2 to 1 cup pineapple juice (enough to reach an 1″ below the top of the fruit)

Green Chocolate Shake Smoothie

  • 3/4 cup bananas, frozen (approx. 1 banana)
  • 1/4 cup spinach
  • 1 oz. avocado
  • 1-2 dates (optional)
  • 1 tbsp. cacao powder
    All-In Greens Smoothie
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter (optional)
  • 1/2 to 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (enough to reach over the greens)

All-In Greens Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup bananas, frozen (approx. 1 medium)
  • 1/2 cup sliced peaches, frozen
  • 1 oz. avocado
  • 1/4 cup spinach
  • 1/4 cup kale
  • a 2-inch piece of celery
  • 1/2 cup apple juice

Instructions

Place the leafy greens in the blender first.

Then add all the other ingredients but the fruit and juice or milk.

Then add the bananas and other fruits (if any).

Add the liquid until it covers the greens or sits 1″ below the top of the fruit.

Turn on blender at the lowest setting and let it run until everything is starting to blend together. Add more liquid if needed to reach desired thickness.

Slowly turn the setting to high.

Once the smoothie is thoroughly blended (and you are getting the vortex at the top), turn off the blender and immediately serve.


Recipe Notes

All these recipes make approximately 10 oz. drinks.

If allergic to peanut butter, you can use another type of nut butter like almond butter or omit it entirely. If allergic to almonds, replace almond milk with unsweetened vanilla hemp milk.

With the All-In Green Smoothie, use even less juice than the others. The celery adds juice to the drink and it’s quite easy to make it thin and runny.

    • Hi Susanne! I really love veggies in smoothies. you’d really be surprised what you can do. Another favorite veggie that isn’t green is beets. You don’t want to add much as it can get a bit overwhelming but like celery, if done right can make a really delicious drink.

  • I’ve tried green smoothies before, but they didn’t go over all that well. I think I was adding too much of one thing, and not neough of another. I also need to try some different greens. I’ll give this another shot. I have a feeling, it will be well received this time around.

      Yeah, your little guy is a bit too young for a few more months. I didn’t start giving any solids to my girl until she was 6 months so it’s right around the corner for your grandson.

      I love giving smoothies to my girl now and I am always adding spinach or kale to them just for the extra nutrient she needs. Grant you, I’m pretty lucky as my kid does actually like vegetables. But I started her on spinach and beets really early. I thought the best thing to do is get her used to them right out the gate instead of holding off. She definitely didn’t like them at first but now she loves beets, carrots, broccoli, peas, spinach, kale, and even radishes! My only suggestion is maybe to stay away from juice as a liquid for a while if possible as they have so much sugar. Grant you, it is natural sugars but it is still sugar and if they get used to sweet foods it might be hard to get them to try other flavors. Maybe instead use unsweetened rice milk or coconut water instead.

      Ever since I had my girl 14 months ago, I’ve become very aware of how many children are lacking in a diet full of vegetables and partly due to the constant struggle to get them to eat veggies. It’s like the old proverb, you can lead a horse to water but can’t make them drink. There are a great many adults that are guilty of this too! And really if a parent isn’t setting an example and eating a healthy diet, how can they expect their children to?

      Plus, I think most health problems are systemic. If you take a holistic approach to your body, many of these health problems could be avoided like type 2 diabetes. Eventually, your body breaks down from lack of good nutrients and exercise.

      I definitely made the focus on kids but these recipes can help anyone and I am so glad that you found my post. I plan to make my next one about how to make smoothies in general.
