If you have read any of my other posts, you know I love making smoothies. There is very little that you can’t do with a smoothie. It is one of the most versatile and easiest things to make. And the real limit to them is your imagination.
I only make smoothies using frozen fruit. No ice or water is ever added. And I’m not a big fan of fresh fruit smoothies either. It’s not that they are terrible but a smoothie with frozen fruit is really that much better. The real drawback to this is you must have a high-performance blender. There is no way around this!
There are plenty of very good high-performance blenders out there but my absolute favorite one is the Vitamix 5200 blender. I’m a big believer in promoting only products that I personally use myself and my Vitamix 5200 is a staple appliance in my kitchen. In fact, it never leaves my kitchen counter space since I use it every day multiple times. The only appliance I use more than this blender is my stovetop or oven.
So I decided to put together this Vitamix 5200 review so that I can really show off this blender and why anyone can benefit to have this appliance in their kitchen too.
Why the Vitamix 5200?
I was first introduced to a Vitamix at my last job in Austin, TX. The place was a local restaurant and one of the items on the menu were smoothies. And they knew how to make a pretty good smoothie at the time
too! Through that job, I learned the basics of smoothie making and how to use only frozen fruit in them. I never gave much thought to smoothies until then because I only knew how to make them with either ice or fresh fruits. But I also didn’t really think much of blenders back in those days either. How times have changed! My favorite position at that job was working the blenders. I was always so impressed with how well the Vitamix performed!
So imagine a hot summer August day in Austin, TX. where the average high was well over 100 degrees. You’re working in a basement section of an old house with very little breeze and you’ve got a never-ending stream of tickets to make. The last thing you need when you have a line of hot, impatient customers stretching out to the parking lot is for one of those machines to die on you.
And those blenders were workhorses! I would abuse them for hours under those conditions and they wouldn’t break or overheat most of the time (Hey, nothing is invincible!). And they did the job! These smoothies would come out so creamy and silky like I was eating a milkshake (a very healthy milkshake).
More Than A Blender To Me: Disco Enough for the BeeGees
But a Vitamix 5200 blender doesn’t stop at just smoothies (especially in my house)! I make all my daughter’s baby food with it. The Vitamix has replaced my food processor to make pesto, salsa, hummus, bread crumbs, almond milk, hemp milk, vegan avocado brownies, vegan hot chocolate, salad dressings, marinades, marinara, vegan cheese sauce, nut and seed butter, pumpkin butter, and mayonnaise. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. The Vitamix website has a huge list of other foods you can make such as dips, cakes, muffins, cookies, curries, dough and even soup hot and ready to eat.
Why is that? The friction from the blades works to also heat up the food while it is blending so you can have a hot soup ready to eat in less than 10 minutes. Likewise, you can achieve all sorts of textures with a variety of speeds. If you want a salsa completely pureed like a sauce, no problem! Alternatively, you can leave it chunky too if that is your desire. The different speeds really make a difference!
How the Vitamix 5200 Can Save You Money
Now I know these blenders aren’t cheap. For any kind of high-performance blender, you can expect to spend between $200-$800 easy. So yes, there are cheaper ones out there than the Vitamix brand but even other reviewers will admit that they don’t last as long nor are as powerful.
And the Vitamix 5200 is backed by a 7-year warranty which covers parts, performance, and returns shipping both ways. According to Vitamix, only 1% of the products sold in the US under warranty have been returned to them. So this will probably be one of the best warranties you won’t need.
So say you buy one of the cheaper ones (Oster Versa Pro Performance Blender) and it breaks down on you in two and a half years (like it did for Forbes), that was only $180 sure. But then in seven years, you’ve
bought 3 blenders so in actuality you’ve paid more in the long run by about $100. That’s also 2 fewer blenders in the landfill too.
Now there are plenty of Vitamix blenders out there but this one is really all you need. It has the variable settings that can be changed as the blender is running and the 64 oz. pitcher to do things in large batches. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of some of the other types but I find those functions aren’t necessary and frankly cumbersome. As far as Vitamix blenders go this is one of the cheaper ones.
Still, aren’t convinced? Even if you don’t buy juices or smoothies that often (which average around $9 per drink), eating out is unarguably more expensive than cooking at home. That is the cost that adds up over time. According to the New York Post, the average American spends $1,175 per year on ordering out (read it here). If foods were easier and quicker to make, you’d be less likely to eat out. Even if you cut eating out by half that is $587.50 back in your pocket. In one year the Vitamix pays for itself!
Not to mention healthier too. And better health is priceless.
Time Saver: Not a TARDIS, But Close
If you are like me, you have so much to do in your day. You have a job, children (which are a job too), and a myriad of other things that have to be done. Don’t forget the time needed for yourself! In short, you are incredibly busy and time is precious.
You have a house to clean and meals to cook. The last thing you need or want is all the dishes and clean up from cooking. For all the things that a Vitamix 5200 can do, it essentially replaces other appliances, like a food processor. That’s one less appliance and all the parts to clean up. And the Vitamix itself is super easy to clean too. All you need is a drop of liquid soap and some warm water. Put the machine on high and in 60 seconds it’s clean! Done.
Someone once told me you can either spend money to get back time or spend the time to get money. And between the two, money is replenishable, time is not (unless you have a TARDIS). If you’re like me, you aren’t rich so you spend as little as possible. But if you spend wisely, you can use what you’ve got to get back some of your day to do with it as you please. Isn’t that alone worth it?
The Vitamix 5200 Is a Must-Have in Your Kitchen
Now with all these wonderful things to say about the Vitamix 5200, you must be wondering why I give it 9 stars out of 10. The only drawbacks I have seen to this blender is the noise and the price.
It is a loud blender on the high settings. So much that I do not blend anything in it while my daughter is napping or sleeping and have to plan around her sleep times. And the price would give most people pause. This isn’t a cheap conventional appliance that you can buy on a whim, it is an investment. But nothing is perfect.
I find that all to be a small price to pay for such an irreplaceable item in my kitchen. In short, I love my Vitamix! I cannot imagine my kitchen without it now. And you don’t need to take my word for it. On Amazon, 80% of the reviews from other people have given it 5 stars!
For the sake of your health (and your taste buds), your wallet in the long run, and your time; the best thing you can do for your family and you is to buy a Vitamix 5200 and see for yourself!
Where is the Best Place to go?
You might find a better price on a Vitamix at places like Costco (if they carry it) and it is a much better choice for the environment than shipping. If shipping is your only option, I’ve found the price at both Vitamix and Amazon to be the same. If you buy through Amazon, this will save you on shipping and they have a 5 installment payment plan but, through Vitamix, you can purchase a blender under a two-year payment plan through Paypal. Unless you have about $400 to drop all at once or $80 for 5 months, Vitamix might be your best option.
